Endless Scroll (2024 - 2025)
online Dating Woes
Endless Scroll (2024-2025) is the culmination of 5 years of research and experience in online dating in Singapore, undertaken by the artist. Expressed as fabric installations with extracts of conversations based on real dialogues, painstakingly handwritten and painted on fabric from repurposed trousers, distilling the emotional labour of meeting new people through the online portals. Derived from the artist’s own response to unpromising dating profiles and ‘talking stages,’ which were catalogued and commented on social media over a period of 5 years. The emotional labour put into finding romantic love, simply meeting new people, and everything in between is fore-fronted in this series of fabric works, which calls into question ‘who wears the pants in the relationship’ and the roles we take in conversations purely mediated through a screen. There is an element of interaction where the loop of cloth can be moved in an ‘endless scroll’ by the viewer to manifest the tangible feeling of repetition. The works are displayed on either self massagers and back scratchers or towel racks and laundry drying racks, which have a double meaning of self-pleasure, ‘scratching each other’s backs’ and ‘airing out dirty laundry’ in the hopes that we can relate to each other in the specific traumas and the journey in learning who we are in finding our ‘perfect match’. In a ‘serious’ examination of a common cultural phenomena, adding a further layer of humour as a means for the viewer to easily access the work, Endless Scroll speaks to our current predicament and collective experiences as we navigate using digital mediums to facilitate a very human experience of falling in love.
