laser cut Mixed Media book

Looking at symbols of the South East Asian’s lived experience, this book work highlighted poignant aspects of cultural differences between the artist’s upbringing across South East Asia (with more British Colonial vestiges) and America. For example, “A” highlighted the different pronuciations and spellings for the word “Aluminium/Aluminum” while “Y” stood for “Yellow” with the symbol of a banana (yellow outside, white inside) to reflect the derogatory word for people of Chinese/Asian descent who are deemed “Not Asian/Chinese Enough”.
